ABC ID: Academic Bank of Credits & APAAR Explained

1. What is the Academic Bank of Credits (ABC)?

The Academic Bank of Credits (ABC) is an innovative digital mechanism established by the University Grants Commission (UGC) under the Ministry of Education. Operating similarly to a financial bank account, ABC serves as a virtual storehouse for academic credits earned by individual students throughout their higher education journey.

An ABC ID is a unique 12-digit number assigned to a student that links directly with this credit bank account. When a student completes a course, term, or module at a recognized university or online platform (such as SWAYAM/NPTEL), the institution deposits the corresponding credit units directly into the student’s ABC repository.

2. How the Credit System Works Under NEP 2020

The National Education Policy (NEP 2020) revolutionized traditional rigid degree structures by introducing the National Credit Framework (NCrF) and multi-disciplinary learning:

  • Multiple Entry & Multiple Exit (MEES): Students can exit an undergraduate program after 1 year with a Certificate, 2 years with a Diploma, 3 years with a Bachelor's Degree, or 4 years with an Honours/Research Degree. Their accrued credits remain preserved in ABC.
  • Credit Transfer Between Universities: If a student relocates to another city or switches universities, the receiving institution can redeem and credit previously earned coursework directly from their ABC account.
  • Validity of Stored Credits: Credits stored in the ABC repository typically hold an active validity period (generally up to 7 years, subject to university academic regulations).

3. How ABC ID and APAAR ID Connect

With the introduction of the unified APAAR architecture, the Ministry of Education has integrated ABC ID with APAAR:

While ABC ID was initially launched focusing on higher education course credits, APAAR ID serves as the overarching student identity covering kindergarten, primary, secondary, and higher education. Today, the two systems are deeply synchronized: an APAAR ID provides access to the underlying ABC credit ledger.

4. How Students Can Check Their Earned Credits

  1. Visit the official portal at abc.gov.in.
  2. Click My Account → Student.
  3. Sign in using your verified DigiLocker account credentials.
  4. Your dashboard displays the list of enrolled institutions, subject credits deposited, and total credit tally.
