APAAR ID Name Mismatch: What Students Should Know & How to Fix

By APAAR Educational Editorial Desk Updated: September 2026 Mismatch Rectification Steps

1. Why Name & Demographic Mismatches Occur

During the official APAAR ID generation protocol, the school's UDISE+ database triggers an automated demographic matching query with UIDAI. The matching query evaluates:

  • Student Full Name (including initials, honorifics, and spacing)
  • Date of Birth (DD/MM/YYYY)
  • Gender

If there is any discrepancy—even a single letter difference, an extra space, or initials placed before the name instead of after—the automated API returns a Demographic Authentication Failed error.

2. Common Types of Discrepancies

Spelling Variations

Examples: "Pooja" vs "Puja", "Ritik" vs "Hrithik", or missing middle names.

Surname & Initials Placement

Examples: "S. Alex" in school registers vs "Alex Samuel" in Aadhaar.

Date of Birth (DOB) Discrepancy

Day/month swapped, or estimated birth year on early Aadhaar enrollments.

Father's / Mother's Name Field

Mismatch in guardian demographic records affecting minor student validation.

3. Determining Which Record to Correct

Before making corrections, decide which record contains the true, permanent legal data:

Option A: Correct School Records (UDISE+)

If your Aadhaar card has your correct name spelling and matches your birth certificate: Submit a formal written application to your school principal attaching a photocopy of your Aadhaar card and birth certificate. The school nodal officer can edit the student entry on the UDISE+ portal.

Option B: Correct Aadhaar Card (UIDAI)

If your School Admission Register / 10th Board Certificate has your correct name: Update your Aadhaar card to match your school certificate. Visit an authorized Aadhaar Seva Kendra or update demographic details on the official UIDAI portal at myaadhaar.uidai.gov.in.

4. Resubmitting for APAAR Generation

Once the records are harmonized:

  1. Notify your school’s APAAR nodal coordinator that the data update is complete.
  2. Provide a photocopy of the updated document.
  3. The school administrator re-initiates the authentication trigger on the UDISE+ dashboard.
  4. Upon matching, the 12-digit APAAR ID is assigned immediately and will sync to DigiLocker within 48 hours.
